Mamaroneck Field Hockey has been to the State Finals the
last two years. So they’ve certainly established a reputation for winning. As
team captain, Jessica Corbin realizes the role she has with everyone gunning for
you.
“It’s a lot harder to stay on top once you’re already
there so we need to stay focused in practice and make sure we can get back to
where we were last year,” says the senior midfielder.
On the field, her line is in the middle of it, while
leaning toward the offensive end. The defense goes to midfield then it’s our job
to get it up the field and jump on the rebound to get the goal, she
says.
They’ve got it down and the cohesiveness pays off nicely.
All the winning is good, she says.
On the other hand, she’s not deterred with the loss of
six seniors and where it leaves this year’s veterans. We’re responsible for
getting the younger players to have as much urgency as we do, and if everyone
works hard, I’m pretty sure we can get all the way back, she says.
Of course, the goal of winning the states means
pressure. We'll take it one step at a time and not get ahead of ourselves, she
says.
In the interim, the team will be going to Florida this month for
team building and a lot of hard work. Fun
wouldn't be part of the bonding, would it? “Yeah,” she said unable to contain a giggle.
But having the last laugh is all that matters.
